An update on my experiences with the game that is the secret lovechild of Gina Lollobrigida and Patrick Moore, the one and only Super Mario Galaxy. I’ll give you a few moments to cast out that mental image, and then tell you that the number of power stars I currently have is 69. Sorry about that.

Yes, the shoinan household has a new resident and it’s a happy and friendly one. When the Wii came out in December 2006 I’ll admit that I was not impressed, and of course I was not alone. So much was my disgust that I created a Facebook group called “The Wii is nothing more than two GameCubes stuck together with duct tape”, referencing the vast snidery of Maxis team member Chris Hecker. I vowed that I would never get a Wii, that it was barely even last-gen and that it would never sell. Of course I was completely wrong.

As the new year took its first few steps and the hangover diminished, I felt the traditional need to reflect with my long-suffering, non-gamer girlfriend upon the titles I’d most enjoyed in 2007. After some non-directional rambling I was able to narrow it down to a particularly uncontroversial three: Call of Duty 4, BioShock and The Orange Box (game collection or otherwise). Several weeks later I stumbled upon an epiphany, a missing link between these games. They were all first-person games with mute protagonists. That may not sound like much of a discovery to you, but it explained exactly why I had enjoyed these games more than any other in the past year.

After drooling over trailers for the resplendent Devil May Cry 4, I was pleased to discover what seemed like good news about its Collector’s Edition. That didn’t last long.

The current Marmite game of split opinion is Assassin’s Creed, released by Ubisoft Montreal last November. Its yeasty goodness has been leading the video game charts, at times charging ahead of the seemingly less savoury tastes of CoD4, Uncharted and Halo 3. Is it any good, though?

Having read Janice Turner’s recent article for The Times newspaper, I actually find myself a little lost for words. And no, that’s not because video games have robbed me of the ability to form a coherent arguement. Instead of my rambling, here are a few choice replies to Ms. Turner’s piece:
