It’s been patiently waiting in the wings like it’s the secret third Minogue sister - here’s a review of Conflict: Denied Ops.

Devil May Cry 4 is not my first experience of Capcom’s hack-and-slash series. I vaguely remember playing Devil May Cry when it came out in 2001, and that I thought it was kinda fun. For reasons that have deserted me with old age, I let the next two installments pass me by. However, with February and March being all quiet on the gaming front, I was more than willing to give the series another go. “More than willing’” because watching its gobsmackingly gorgeous trailer had practically given me respiratory failure and soaked Y-fronts. It was very pretty. Really Pretty. I’m talking Emily Deschanel type pretty. If you’re wondering, I chose her ‘cos I’ve been watching way too much Bones of late, plus the show’s name lends itself to an easy ‘hur-hur, I’d bone her’ joke.

I can’t seem to get to sleep … or maybe it would be more accurate to say that I don’t seem to want to sleep. Accordingly, I’ve decided to type stuff up until my own tiresome word-drool inevitably sends me packing to the land of Z. Today’s subject of choice: Mario Kart.

So I’ve already talked some about naming children as a gamer, but now, in a clever twist of creative journalism, I’m going to talk about naming cats as a gamer! Amazing, aren’t I?

Hit points, health bars, life hearts, percentages, crimson omens; health, as a game mechanism, is a prominent feature in the majority of video games. That’s hardly surprising when you consider that most games involve conflict and competition. Health is a device that helps determine whether characters, and players by proxy, are winning or losing. It is not limited to appearing solely in shooting and fighting games, however. Elite Beat Agents employs the superbly named Elite-O-Meter, Trauma Center games involve keeping a patient’s heart rate above zero, and even a certain blue spikeball uses rings that he collects as a protective shield. Don’t ask how, he just bloody well does. Health is pretty much everywhere and it’s something that we as gamers take for granted.

A small and quick shout-out to those involved at The Platformers who very kindly put up my article about narrative choice in videogames as a guest editorial piece. Special thanks to Tyler ‘Schlew’ Ohlew for his help and kind words. Go over there and check out the rest of the site. I heartily recommend their podcast, they’ve just done an excellent (and very funny) episode all about the 64-bit era. Ah, Goldeneye, how I loved thee.
Review: Audiosurf March 4, 2008

One’s a simulation that lets players guide a micro-organism up the food chain whilst the other is a top-down shooter where destroying enemies harmonizes guitar riffs over the soundtrack. Both fl0w and Everyday Shooter were excellent games, but there is something else that ties the two together. Just like Dylan Fitterer’s Audiosurf, they were essentially the brainchild and hard work of just one individual. 2007 represented the return of indie games into the mainstream, but can Audiosurf continue the revival of one-man-band game development in 2008? Here’s a review. Wipeout!
